If you feel like you have tried every hormone fix yet nothing seems to stick, your gut might be the hidden link you have been missing. Many women I work with feel exhausted, puffy, bloated, and frustrated because they are doing everything “right” but their bodies are not responding. They are exercising, eating well, and trying to support their hormones, yet they still feel tired and inflamed. If this sounds like you, you are not alone. Your gut and hormones talk to each other constantly, and when the gut is out of balance, your hormones feel it.
Women who struggle with PCOS, hypothyroidism, chronic bloating, irregular periods, and stubborn weight gain often discover that their gut has been influencing their symptoms more than they ever realised. This is why functional testing plays such an important role. It gives us clarity and allows us to stop guessing. You can explore how I work with clients using this approach on my Work With Me page.
Your Gut and Hormones Are Always Communicating
Your gut breaks down and absorbs the raw materials your hormones are made from. If your gut is inflamed or imbalanced, you will not absorb nutrients properly. This can disrupt hormone production and create a cascade of symptoms such as PMS, low mood, fatigue, poor skin, bloating, and weight fluctuations.
Your gut microbiome also communicates directly with your endocrine system. When the gut is healthy, this communication is smooth and supportive. When it is not, hormone imbalances start to appear.
Many women begin by trying to fix hormones directly, however the real issue often starts in the gut.
Gut Health and Insulin Balance
An unhealthy gut can increase inflammation which raises the risk of insulin resistance. When inflammation is present, harmful endotoxins can enter the bloodstream and disrupt insulin signalling. This can affect blood sugar balance and make weight loss feel impossible even when you are eating well.
Supporting insulin balance through gut health means focusing on whole foods that contain fibre, polyphenols, healthy fats, quality protein, and complex carbohydrates. These foods nourish your microbiome and support more stable blood sugar control.
How the Gut Influences Thyroid Function
Around twenty percent of your inactive thyroid hormone is converted into its active form inside the gut. When your microbiome is healthy, this conversion works efficiently which supports energy, metabolism, brain clarity, and weight regulation.
When gut health is compromised, this conversion can slow down. Many women then experience hypothyroid type symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, constipation, weight gain, and low mood. Poor gut health can also contribute to autoimmune thyroid conditions because it increases intestinal permeability and stimulates the immune system.
If you feel your thyroid might be playing a role, you can read more about my full thyroid testing approach on my Services page.
Gut Health and Cortisol Regulation
Stress impacts the gut and the gut impacts stress. When cortisol is elevated for long periods, it affects the gut lining, increases inflammation, and disrupts microbial balance. This often leads to bloating, digestive symptoms, anxiety, and low resilience to stress.
Over time, this can influence your energy patterns and contribute to adrenal dysfunction. When we support gut health, the body becomes more resilient and better able to regulate the stress response. This is why I focus on nervous system support within my client protocols.
The Gut and Oestrogen Balance
Your gut contains a collection of bacteria called the estrobolome which helps you metabolise and eliminate excess oestrogen. When the gut is healthy, this process works smoothly. When it is not, an enzyme called beta glucuronidase can become elevated which causes oestrogen to be reabsorbed rather than excreted.
This can contribute to symptoms such as PMS, bloating, mood swings, painful periods, acne, stubborn weight gain, and oestrogen dominance patterns. Supporting gut and liver health is essential for healthy oestrogen clearance.
If You Feel Stuck, Your Gut Might Be the Key
Many women feel frustrated because they have been told they are “fine” even though they feel anything but. Your symptoms are real and they are your body’s way of asking for support. You do not need to live with bloating, fatigue, hormonal symptoms, or the feeling that your body is working against you.
